Greta Gerwig wore overalls to her 'Gossip Girl' audition

We've never loved Greta Gerwig more.

In a chat on HuffPost Live, the Mistress America actress shared some cringeworthy stories about starting out in the biz, including one anecdote about auditioning for a certain CW show that's basically the antithesis of Frances Ha.

"I have had moments when I was starting out when I was auditioning for things like Gossip Girl," she said.

And, in a scene that could just as easily be from one of Gerwig's on-screen misadventures, she showed up at the audition in the least GG outfit possible.
"They would look at me like, 'Why are you wearing overalls to this audition?' And I'd be like, 'They said she was from a farm!' and they would be like, 'Well, this is Gossip Girl.'"

"There were moments like that, where I didn't fit what they wanted. But I always wanted to be part of them. I wish they had wanted me."
In case you were wondering about that Gossip Girl part—on Season 4, Chuck Bass did date a girl who grew up on a farm, and the part eventually went to Clemence Posey. Who happens to look just like Gerwig.

Luckily, Gossip Girl's loss was Gerwig's gain; the successful indie actress is landing roles where she doesn't have to compromise herself, and she's better off for it.

"I've done my fair share of looking the way people want me to look. I feel like that never really works for me," she reflected. "I think had I been more successful by changing myself... but luckily, I had no choice but to be authentic."
