New 'Scouts Guide' trailer plays by its own zombie rules

For better or for worse, zombies are as incessant in their shambling as they are at still taking a bite out of pop culture. Walking Dead spinoff Fear the Walking Dead makes its debut tonight on AMC, and this weekend also saw the debut of the first trailer for the upcoming horror comedy Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (in theaters Oct. 30). Go ahead and peep the hilarious carnage:

With his tale of three boy scouts who have save their town from a flesh-eating horde on the night of the final campout, director Christopher Landon told us he wanted to make a 1980s throwback to The Goonies and Monster Squad that stretched the zombie genre a bit and played it more for laughs than gross-outs:
"I just loved the opportunity to sink my teeth in that world and not be stuck in the horror stuff."
Soooo... zombies with personality? Check.

Zombie cats? Check.

Zombie musical number? Check.

Landon says he wanted Scouts Guide to break all the rules:
"It always comes down to the debate of, are they slow zombies or are they fast zombies? Are they World War Z zombies or George Romero zombies? I didn’t care. I just wanted a variety – I wanted a pu pu platter of zombies."
