Miley's producer: Surprise album is 'next level'
Miley Cyrus closed the VMAs Sunday with a performance and an announcement: Her new album is available online for free.
But leading up to Sunday, Cyrus and her team kept the music a secret. Hitmaker Mike WiLL Made-It, who produced a few tracks on the project (the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne produced much of the album), barely hinted at it while talking to Paste BN on the VMAs carpet. We even asked him if he knew anything about what Miley was presenting at the show.
"I definitely know some things," he replied coolly.
Then, while drinking champagne and "getting turnt" (his words), he said this about the album Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz (but we didn't know what he was referring to at the time):
"Just know that I said 'next level.' I said it first."
Stylistically, the record is a clear departure from the poppy Bangerz, which Mike WiLL also produced. Dead Petz is psychedelic, sometimes graphic and not backed by her label. It's not exactly radio-ready.
So why did she make this "next level" album? Cyrus told The New York Times this:
"I can just do what I want to do, and make the music I want to make... It just happened naturally in my head. It’s like anything — styles just change.”
