Stephen Colbert trumps Jeb Bush raffle with one of his own

Guest Etiquette Rule No. 1: Don't surprise your host at his place – especially if your host is Stephen Colbert and his place is The Late Show.

Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush, a guest on Colbert's inaugural show Tuesday in the prime CBS late-night slot (11:35 p.m. ET/PT), set up a campaign fundraising raffle ($3 minimum donation) for a VIP ticket to the show apparently without coordinating it with his host.

Colbert said as much in a video. He calls Bush's raffle a great idea – except for one thing.
"No one from Jeb's campaign asked me if this was OK with me to raise money off my first show," he says. "Where's my cut of that sweet three bucks, Governor?"
Colbert was only getting started.
"As the governor points out in his (raffle) e-mail, this is a huge chance to see the very first 'Stephen Colbert Late Show,' which, apparently, now has 'a new host,' " he says. "Gosh, I hope it's Amy Schumer. She is hilarious!"
Then, Colbert proceeded to show his, shall we say, raffle-ish side, announcing his own contest: "Jeb Bush on the Stephen Colbert Late Show Raffle." The winner also will get a VIP seat at Colbert's first show, with contributions to the raffle (Omaze.com/Colbert) going to the Yellow Ribbon Fund, which supports injured service members and their families.

The raffle's winner also can submit one non-obscene question that Colbert will ask Bush on the show. The host offered one suggestion: "Don't you wish you'd consulted Stephen before launching your contest?"

Bush, who already is competing against Donald Trump and the rest of the Republican field, now has to contend with Colbert. He responded from the Philadelphia airport via Twitter, telling Colbert and anyone else watching that he is lowering the contribution for his raffle to $1 and that he will make a contribution to the Yellow Ribbon Fund.

He even threw in his own comic response to Colbert's video: "I thought the host was Amy Schumer. I totally blew it."

Not a bad comeback, especially from a presidential candidate, but it leads us to Guest Etiquette Rule No. 2: Don't get into a joke contest with your host, especially if your host is Stephen Colbert.

Not sure we've heard the end of this one. And, thinking about it, these guys got some mileage invoking Amy Schumer's name. When are you setting up a raffle, Amy?
