Luuucy! Cate Blanchett may play Lucille Ball in a new Aaron Sorkin biopic
How's this for an Aaron Sorkin origin story—a young Sorkin perches in front of his family's TV set, watching I Love Lucy re-runs, sees Lucille Ball patter out her infamous "Vitameatavegamin" sketch and thinks to himself, "Say, why can't all people talk that fast?"
And thus, the head-spinning walk-and-talk Sorkin dialogue was born.
Okay, that definitely never happened, but with this new tidbit of casting news, we can dream—Cate Blanchett is reportedly starring in a new Lucille Ball biopic written by Sorkin, according to The Wrap.
And because this is Aaron Sorkin, the story of one of America's greatest female comedians will focus on a man. According to The Wrap, the biopic will "chronicle Ball’s 20-year marriage to Desi Arnaz." Because that's the most interesting aspect of the comedy trailblazer's life.
On the one hand, Sorkin's breakneck-paced writing would certainly suit I Love Lucy's screwball nature. But his less-than-stellar track record with writing female characters makes us nervous. Because if there's anyone who deserves an Oscar-worthy portrayal of her legendary life and career, it's Ball—and we'd hate to see a Cate Blanchett performance wasted on another airheaded, one-dimensional female character.
Prove us wrong, Sorkin!
