#TBT: Our 10 favorite Will Smith roles since he debuted 'Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' 25 years ago
OK -- we knew we were getting old, but how in the world has it been 25 YEARS since The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air premiered on NBC? How, Sway?!
This is us right now:
Despite this news about our accelerating aging, we're not here to complain, but rather to celebrate some of the movie milestones in Will Smith's lucrative, Oscar-nominated career that all started when he took over Aunt Viv and Uncle Phil's butler-maintained mansion back in the day.
So, here are our 10 favorite Will Smith characters since, gasp, 1990!
Paul, Six Degrees of Separation (1993)
His role as a young, gay con artist was the first time we got to see Will's serious acting chops.
Det. Mike Lowery, Bad Boys franchise (1995 and 2003)
Will Smith + Martin Lawrence ÷ Michael Bay x franchise potential = Instant classic
Captain Steven Hiller, Independence Day (1996)
"Now that's what I call a close encounter." Yassssssssssssssss!
Agent J, Men in Black franchise (1997, 2002, 2012)
More aliens, but this time with more comedy. Oh, and a curmudgeonly straight man in the form of Tommy Lee Jones. Man, the '90s were great.
Muhammad Ali, Ali (2001)
Another serious role and a biopic, no less. The role earned Will his first Oscar nomination.
Del Spooner, I, Robot (2004)
Yes, this sci fi flick is overly slick and kinda corny, but we love it for two reasons: 1) a lawd-have-mercy butt shot and 2) a young, pre-weird Shia LaBeouf.
Hitch, Hitch (2005)
Charming, funny, handsome, smooth. Classic box office-boosting Will Smith.
Chris Gardner, The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
Another Oscar nomination and all the feels. That last scene tho. TEARS.
Robert Neville, I Am Legend (2007)
It's bleak, it's depressing, but it's also Will Smith saving the world -- again -- so, what's not to like?
Hancock, Hancock (2008)
A unique story about a drunk and lazy superhero with a hot soulmate (Charlize Theron)? Yes, please.
