Matt Damon tells Paste BN's Andrea Mandell about the importance of potatoes in his new film 'The Martian.'

In sci-fi film The Martian, Matt Damon is a lonely astronaut with limited food options on Mars. His food of choice/necessity? Potatoes!
"We had to use potatoes in various stages of the harvest," Matt Damon told Paste BN. "I learned how to grow potatoes on this movie, actually."
Damon really did get to watch his potato plants grow "on the sound stage next to where we were shooting," he explained.
"They were actually growing potatoes throughout the course of the movie," Damon said.
So yeah, that's why the potatoes in the film look REAL.
