5 actors who could play an adult Harry Potter in 'Cursed Child'
It's official Harry Potter fans: The new play about your favorite boy wizard is actually going to be a play about your favorite adult wizard.
J.K. Rowling announced Friday that Harry Potter and Cursed Child will take place 19 years after Deathly Hallows (so at the same time as that epilogue), featuring a grown-up Harry and his youngest son, Albus.
While this may have very, very interesting implications for the story (Will Ron and Hermione be involved? What about Harry's other kids? Do we have to call him Albus Severus?) it also raises a hugely important question for the world: Who is going to play the thirty-something Harry?
We know Daniel Radcliffe isn't interested in reprising that role anytime soon, plus he's actually too young to do it. But, don't worry, there are plenty of talented, charming and handsome British actors in their thirties (and early forties) that could knock the part out of the water. Here are our picks.
Hugh Dancy
The Hannibal actor has the right look, he has the right charm and he knows how to navigate the waters of intense fandoms. Our other four choices might be a little bit wishful thinking, but we absolutely know Dancy would be a great fit for the role. Someone get him some glasses, ASAP.
Matt Smith
It's the Doctor Who/Harry Potter crossover that we only dreamed about. Smith is a little quirky, for sure, but he knows how to wield a magic wand sonic screwdriver. And hey, remember when the 10th Doctor from Doctor Who, David Tennant, played Barty Crouch, Jr. in the fourth Harry Potter movie? It's only fair that the 11th Doctor gets a crack at the franchise, too.
Tom Hiddleston
Everyone's favorite Marvel villain would definitely bring a sophisticated take on the role, but we're sure Harry has grown up a bit during all that growing up. Plus he's a long-time stage veteran.
James McAvoy
After playing Professor Xavier in X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past, McAvoy knows about the pains of being a tortured chosen one with a lot of power. Also, wild hair.
Dominic Cooper
He's played the supporting role in a bunch of genre films (Captain America: The First Avenger, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Dracula Untold to name a few), so why not put him center stage for once? He'd be a bold choice, but maybe Harry Potter could use a little boldness.
