Dame Helen Mirren can pull off a funky fascinator better than anyone. So, it looked perfectly natural for the star to wear a multitude of fancy toppers as gossip columnist Hedda Hopper in biopic Trumbo.

Hopper wears a new hat "daily darling, daily," says the character in the film.

Trumbo director Jay Roach referred to Mirren as "the best wearer of hats in the world" at the Beverly Hills premiere of his movie Tuesday night. However, the actress wasn't always the trendiest hat lady.

Mirren told Paste BN that she has bad memories of the accessory she wore to accept her first Golden Globe in 1997.

"In England, at any posh event, you wear a hat," she said on the 'Trumbo' carpet. "I thought, well [the Globes] is a posh event, I better wear a hat.

So she did. And it was black and fluffy and "a big mistake."

"Joan Rivers said I was by far the worst dressed," Mirren recalled.
