As NFL teams jockeyed for spots in the playoffs on Sunday, Will Smith was in Palm Springs receiving an award for his work in Concussion, the damning football film which reveals the staggering risk of head trauma professional players face.

It was also just days after players like Jets cornerback Darelle Revis and offensive tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson told Sports Illustrated Dr. Bennet Omalu’s findings astounded and educated them.

“It was actually surprising to me that the information had never been compiled in this way for the players,” said Smith on Sunday at the 'Variety' Creative Impact Awards brunch.

Smith noted “how many players have called to see the movie and talked after. As an artist, if feels like I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing when you create something that is entertainment but is also informative. I’m excited the players have been where I’m getting the greatest reaction from.”

As crucial NFL games played out on field across the country, Smith, who will attend the Golden Globes on Sunday, said he believes Concussion is  “one of those films I think history will be really kind to."

"I think it will be something that people come back to," he continued. "There’s no excuses beyond this point. The information and Bennet’s experiences and the science and everything has been compiled in a way that people can make really good solid decisions."
