How Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen snuck Ali G into the Oscars
When Sacha Baron Cohen reprised his gangster-white-boy character Ali G at the Oscars, in a ceremony that centered around discussions of race, the bit all seemed like part of the show.
But as he originally revealed in an interview with Good Morning Britain, the Oscars actually forbade the comedian from bringing any of his notoriously politically incorrect characters onstage when he presented with Olivia Wilde.
So, in the most Sacha Baron Cohen move of all time, he and his wife Isla Fisher smuggled his Ali G costume in, changed in the bathroom minutes before the show, and the rest is unscripted Oscars history.
"I was in the disabled toilet for 40 minutes sticking the beard on," he said. "I had to claim food poisoning."
And on Kimmel last night, Isla Fisher broke down how they pulled off the stunt: by stuffing his costume into her Spanx. GENIUS.
Luckily, Cohen's jokes were Chris Rock-approved.
"I was a bit worried how they'd react to the first gag but I bumped into Chris Rock on the way on and pitched him the gig and he gave me the thumbs up, so I went for it," he said.
Bravo, sir.
