The gloves came on during 'The People v. O.J. Simpson'
Everybody has a theory.
Tuesday’s episode of The People v. O.J. Simpson, titled Conspiracy Theories, touched on proposed explanations for the murders of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson that did not implicate her ex-husband, O.J.
Were the murders drug related? Was O.J. setup by Los Angeles law enforcement?
Marcia Clark (Sarah Paulson) impressively discounted the latter hunch with a demonstration using shot glasses at an out-of-town birthday party for a friend of Chris Darden's (Sterling K. Brown). After, Chris accompanied Marcia as she swayed down the hallway of their hotel. When they arrived at her room, he stared at her longingly as she leaned against her door. Ultimately, Chris decided not to compromise their professional relationship and he didn't make a move, which seemed to irk Marcia.
Back in the office, Chris brought up the idea of having O.J. try on the gloves that had DNA evidence on them. He thought it would make a bored jury sit up and pay attention. But Marcia strongly advised against it.
"You turn over control of a demonstration to the opponent, you don’t know what’s going to happen and certainly not to the defendant himself,” she said.
In the courtroom, Robert Shapiro (John Travolta), who recently had his allegiance to the defense team questioned by O.J., (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), somehow tried on a glove without anyone noticing. Since the gloves were too small for his hands, he thought if O.J. tried them on, they certainly wouldn't fit. The defense team liked the idea, and because they wanted the prosecution to bring up the idea of a demonstration, F. Lee Bailey (Nathan Lane) and Johnnie Cochran (Courtney B. Vance) manipulated Chris into calling for it.
Of course, O.J. appeared to struggle to make the gloves fit.
"These gloves are too small, too tight," he told the jury. "They won't fit."
Johnnie and Robert slapped hands under the table to congratulate each other.
In the last scene of the episode, Chris called the Goldmans to apologize for the glove demonstration, and his vow that the prosecution would "come back from this" was absolutely heartbreaking.
