'Straight Outta Compton' cast slyly calls out Academy at MTV Movie Awards

The Oscars might be over, but #OscarsSoWhite has left a mark. Even at the MTV Movie Awards.

Straight Outta Compton, which only earned one Academy Award nomination (for writing, and all of the nominees were white) this year, won big at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday. The movie won the first-ever True Story award for a movie based on real events. When the cast came up to accept their golden popcorn, there was just a little bit of a mention of that other award show.

When Eazy-E actor Jason Mitchell's turn to speak, he said he wanted to "thank the Academy ... I mean MTV, my bad."

Yeah...

Mitchell went on to thank the actual giver of the award, MTV, saying, “You’ve all been pioneers for the N.W.A.”

He added,  “N.W.A and ‘Straight Outta Compton’s’ story really speaks to so much more than music. It really speaks to brotherhood.”

Diversity came up again in the ceremony when Will Smith was receiving the Generation Award. When presenting the award to Smith, Halle Berry noted, “Will is a champion for diversity." She said he is "blazing a path for actors by showing that someone of any color can play any role and open any movie and can win every award and can be the biggest freakin’ movie star in the whole world.”
