Final entry: Ian Somerhalder says 'Vampire Diaries' to end season 8

Mystic Falls has felt a little empty without Nina Dobrev's Elena anchoring the show, but with rumors that she is going to return next season, Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder had to nip that joy in the bud with the news that season 8 will be the last season.

“We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice,” Somerhalder said at Walker Stalker Con in Nashville Saturday.

The supernatural vampire show nears the end of its seventh season in May. The CW has not announced anything official, but with Somerhalder's announcement and co-star Kat Graham set to leave in season 8, it seems like the show is readying itself for its final entry.
