Colbert defends Larry Wilmore's controversial WHCD routine
Take it from Stephen Colbert — if your White House Correspondent's Dinner hosting stint doesn't make people mad, you didn't do your job.
No Correspondent's Dinner speech has riled up the same amount of controversy as the Late Show host's 2006 routine, where he roasted then-President Bush to his face. But the fracas around Larry Wilmore's closing joke, where he congratulated Obama on his presidency by dropping the n-word, is coming close.
Colbert responded on Monday night's show with a defense of Wilmore, whose Nightly Show replaced the Colbert Report last year when Colbert departed for CBS.
"People in Washington aren't used to seeing two black men speaking at the same event," he said, before zinging Donald Trump. "There was a little controversy, a moment at the end where Larry said the n-word. It was shocking, but it did lay the groundwork for President Trump to say it next year.”
Yikes!
"I am confident that Larry will receive the ultimate recognition for his work — never being invited back," Colbert joked. But...didn't Obama say this was the last dinner ever?
