'Independence Day: Resurgence' extended trailer is basically the whole film
Destruction of landmarks: check. Witty quip courtesy of Jeff Goldblum: check. Generic pretty boy protagonist played by a Hemsworth: check.
The extended trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence has all the requirements for a blockbuster sequel and more -- essentially telling the entire movie's story in five minutes. There's even the supposed plot twist of Bill Pullman's former president going into a chamber with an alien to offer himself up as a telepathic communicator (and explain those ... interesting Empire Magazine covers).
The film takes place 20 years after the events of the first Independence Day, with Goldblum's David discovering that the aliens from the first attack sent a distress call to the rest of their species that just got picked up now.
With the help of Charlotte Gainsbourg's scientist, Liam Hemsworth's fighter pilot character and the former president's daughter (Maika Monroe), they figure out how to ward off an even bigger attack from the invasive aliens.
Independence Day: Resurgence is directed by Roland Emmerich and has a cast rounded out by Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner and Sela Ward. The movie hits theaters June 24.
