What does that 'X-Men: Apocalypse' post-credit scene mean?

Spoiler alert! The following contains major plot details from X-Men: Apocalypse. Also the post-credits scenes. So seriously don't scroll if you haven't seen it/care about seeing it. Or go ahead if you want to be spoiled. Up to you.

When you walked out ofX-Men: Apocalypse this weekend (unless you’re a hard-core comics fan) you probably had one big question itching your mind: So, what is Essex Corp?

In the movie’s post-credits scene (yup these aren’t going away, kids), we see a group of suited men walking through William Stryker's Weapon X facility, stepping over the dead bodies and blood (courtesy of Wolverine in a feral state after Jean, Cyclops and Nightcrawler freed him from his cage). The men walk into Wolverine’s enclosure and open a freezer which contains a vial of blood marked “Weapon X.” The leader of the group puts the vial in a suitcase that is emblazoned with the words “ESSEX CORP.”

So what does that mean, exactly?

Comic fans will know that Essex Corporation is the company of a character named Nathaniel Essex, who also just happens to be a supervillain named Mr. Sinister (subtle name, we know). In the comics he’s a scientist from the 1800s who, with the help of a certain villain you may know named Apocalypse, is given mutant powers and made pretty-much immortal. He spends a lot of his time experimenting on mutants (a super common theme in these movies and in the comics, see Stryker himself and Ajax from Deadpool), trying to make them even more powerful. So his interest in Stryker’s Weapon X tracks.

Besides the obvious Apocalypse tie, the interesting thing about potentially introducing Mr. Sinister into upcoming X movies is his connection to other characters. In the comics he has deep ties to the Summers family, specifically Scott’s son Nathan, who becomes Cable. Cable is very connected to a certain irreverant mutant named Deadpool. Does that mean Deadpool may show up in a future X-Men movie?

If Apocalypse can basically ignore the basic concept of human aging, we think anything can happen.
