Sam Heughan says those sexy 'Outlander' scenes aren't so sexy to film

Outlander'sracy scenes have been a talking point since the show first aired in 2014 -- breaking the standards of what sex scenes look like on television and pushing characters and plot lines forward. And, well, they're just good.

But they're not always so good to film, says the perfectly chiseled Scottish actor Sam Heughan. Speaking with Variety, the star said they are actually "so not sexy," but appreciates them for the reasons we all do.

“We always talk to the producers and the writers and work out how it moves the relationship forward or what it reveals about the character. But our show is definitely a central relationship and so we learn a lot about our characters through their sex life,” he said.

His co-star Caitriona Balfe tends to agree.

Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe: Sex scenes are never easy
Caitriona Balfe talks to Paste BN about the sex scenes in the Starz series "Outlander."

"The sex scenes are never very easy to film," she told Paste BN. "You're usually not wearing an awful lot in front of a room of probably about 20 crew so it's always slightly awkward."

But for the complicated relationship between Claire and Jamie Fraser, the scenes are crucial in telling the story of the couple's emotional connection, or periodic distance, as viewers have seen in season 2.

"As we go on in the season and the show, you'll see it always tells an important part of Claire and Jamie's relationship, so it'll be there when it's important," she says.

And as far as any mishaps, there's only been once momentary misplacement of Sam's modesty pouch.

"Luckily I was very far away from that so my eyes didn't start to burn."
