'Walking Dead' writer Robert Kirkman is 'disappointed' in George R.R. Martin
Update: Robert Kirkman clarified his remarks about George R.R. Martin in a series of tweets, saying that he "loves" the Game of Thrones author, and that he was "joking" in the Rolling Stone interview.
Original story:
Everybody likes The Walking Dead. Everybody likes Game of Thrones. So, naturally, the creators of these two epic stories should be best friends, right?
Maybe.
Robert Kirkman, who wrote the comics The Walking Dead show is based on, expressed his "disappointment" with George R.R. Martin, the author behind the Game of Thrones books. Both of these guys have hugely popular genre TV shows based on their written work. What could be the problem? Well, like some of you, Kirkman has issue with how Martin and the show have handledGame of Thrones catching up to the books.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the magazine asked Kirkman if he might tell the TV show writers where he plans on taking the comics in the future -- which is exactly what Martin has done with the Game of Thrones showrunners. Kirkman, however, really doesn't like that plan.
"I would never do that," he said to the magazine. "That's the one thing I'm disappointed in George R.R. Martin for doing. He should have just been like, '(expletive) you. You make it up now, I'll get to mine when I'm ready.'"
While The Walking Dead has distinctly lagged behind the comics during its run (a combination of the show going on its own path and timing), Game of Thrones is in a super weird position of being an adaptation of source material no one has yet seen, and some of which is not written. So far in season 6 that has been mostly a blessing for the show itself, but odd for book readers. Some of the twists are coming straight from Martin, and some are not. And we're all just along for the ride.
But hey, at least we know who the dead characters on Game of Thrones actually are, cough Walking Dead season finale, cough.
