Song of summer watch: Tinashe's 'Superlove'
It's been a minute since we heard from Tinashe, whose gyrating breakout hit 2 On launched her into the mainstream in 2014, before her debut album Aquarius failed to captivate quite the same levels of attention. In a year already loaded with releases from pop heavyweights, the R&B singer is an artist who needs a sturdy return single to turn heads, especially considering all the starpower on the charts this summer.
Luckily for Tinashe, Superlove is one of her best songs to date. DJ Mustard defined 2 On's sound with his bouncing club beats, but here, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart — the team behind hits like Rihanna’s Umbrella, Ciara's Ride and Baby by Justin Bieber, take over producing duties with a retro sheen and My Boo-reminiscent drums.
Tinashe's dexterous delivery has traces of both Rihanna's affected sing-rapping and Ciara's superfine vocals, but of all the producers' previous smashes, Superlove's dynamic pace sounds the most like Baby, the early Bieber classic. (Yes, that's a good thing.)
