'Luke Cage' drops a powerful official trailer

"The world is ready for a bulletproof black man," Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Coker said at Comic-Con in July. And boy, are we ready for Luke Cage.

The official trailer for the 13-episode Netflix series dropped Tuesday, and it showed more of Luke Cage's past and his rise to becoming a vigilante on the streets of Harlem.

A prison experiment leaves Luke (Mike Colter) with super strength and unbreakable skin, but he is unwilling to take on the vigilante mantle until the threat of nightclub boss Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes (Mahershala Ali) arises. Inspired by Daredevil and Jessica Jones nurse Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), Luke takes to the streets and becomes a neighborhood hero.

Luke Cage also stars Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard, Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Theo Rossi as Shades and Frank Whaley as Rafael Scarfe. The series is the third in Marvel's planned Netflix suite of shows after Daredevil and Jessica JonesIron FistPunisher and the team-up series, The Defenders, are all in the works.

All 13 episodes of Luke Cage are set to premiere on Netflix Sept. 30.
