Christina Aguilera, Zayn and other essential songs from 'The Get Down'
What's a TV show about hip hop without a decent soundtrack? Baz Luhrmann's The Get Down premieres on Netflix on Friday, and accompanying Luhrmann's flashy tale of hip-hop's origins in the 1970s Bronx is an equally colorful soundtrack, packed with big-name features. We look at the other stars who went retro for the show's soundtrack.
Christina Aguilera, Telepathy
So, why hasn't Christina gone full disco yet? She teams up with the legendary producer Nile Rodgers for Telepathy, and her Donna Summer-by-way-of-Mariah Carey performance is one of her best in recent memory. C'mon, Xtina — we're waiting for that ABBA covers album.
Miguel, Cadillac
The R&B singer gives his sexed-up vocals the '70s treatment, adding horns and a disco chorus to some very Miguel-esque lyrics about "getting down" in the back seat of the aforementioned car.
Janelle Monae, Hum Along And Dance (Gotta Get Down)
We love anytime Janelle goes retro with her colorful brand of R&B, and this dancefloor anthem would be right at home on any of her recent releases.
Zayn, You Can't Hide / You Can't Hide From Yourself (Touch of Class GMF Remix)
Zayn joins forces with hip-hop OG Grandmaster Flash for their version of a classic Teddy Pendergrass sample. The ex-1D singer appears for a few minutes, giving the 1977 song You Can't Hide From Yourself a slowed-down, falsetto-heavy update, before Pendergrass' original track takes over, showing the young 'uns how the legends did disco.
Jaden Smith, Losing Your Mind
Smith gets plenty of screen time as one of The Get Down's stars, and the soundtrack is dotted with his contributions. Losing Your Mind, with Atlanta rapper/singer Raury, is the highlight, as the two trade bars about being young, wealthy and restless.
