How do you shake up 'The Voice' bromance? With Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys and 'Jolene'
Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys are here to break the glass ceiling ofThe Voice. As Blake Shelton said in the preview of season 11, which aired on NBC after the Olympics Closing Ceremonies Sunday night, they're poised to make history as the first time the 6-year-old show has had "two girl coaches."
That's right: On this season of America Sings Karaoke, the gender ratio of coaches will surpass that of Congress and hit 50%. Though Christina Aguilera served for an admirable six seasons, and Gwen Stefani flirted with Shelton for two, they never sat in the robotic swiveling chairs at the same time.
In the vacuum of two female leads, Shelton and Adam Levine have developed a bromance of well-documented, ridiculous proportions. So much so that they've lamented they're tired of the term.
So, how's the season looking? Are we poised for a "major shakeup" and lots of lady power and Ani Difranco sing-alongs?
Probably not, but at least we got a Jolene cover. And several of the contestants in the blind auditions joined Cyrus and Keys' teams.
Then it was back to an overblown cover of Aerosmith, because nothing says new season of a singing competition like 70s male power rock.
The Voice premieres Monday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
