The first trailer for Ghost in the Shell, the Scarlett Johansson-starring sci-fi flick based on a popular Japanese manga hit the Internet and it's full of all the action and eeriness we were expecting.
Although Johansson introduces the trailer by saying how excited and thankful she is to be playing the role, her casting has not been met with much enthusiasm from fans. The character, who she refers to as "The Major" is named Major Motoko Kusanagi in the Japanese source material and traditionally depicted as Asian. From the moment her casting was announced, criticisms of whitewashing has followed the movie, much as it has for recent films including Doctor Strange and Aloha. The first trailer for Ghost features a wealth of Japanese imagery, from costuming to sets to the characters.
At a fan event in Japan introducing the trailer, director Rupert Sanders brushed off criticism of the casting. “I think whenever you cast someone someone’s going to be critical about it," he said, via The Verge. "To me it was, you know, I stand by my decision — she’s the best actress of her generation and I was flattered and honored that she would be in this film. So many people who were around the original anime have been vehemently in support of her because she’s incredible and there are very few like her."
Ghost in the Shell hits theaters March 31.
