Podcast Pick of the Week: Catherine Keener, Oscar Isaac star in 'Homecoming'

Looking for something new to listen to while you drive to work/go for a walk/wash the dishes? We're here for you. In our weekly series, we highlight a podcast, audio personality or specific story worth hearing.

This week's pick: Homecoming

Podcast network Gimlet Media has produced plenty of nonfiction gems, including Reply All and Start Up. This week, however, the company is taking a foray into fiction with psychological thriller Homecoming, which debuted its first 25-minute episode this week.

Why it's ripe for listening

There's some serious voice-acting on this show, with Catherine Keener, Oscar Isaac and David Schwimmer starring in the six-episode series. The podcast follows an earnest caseworker (Keener), her domineering supervisor (Schwimmer) and the soldier (Isaac) she treats in an experimental facility that's heading the as-yet-mysterious "homecoming initiative." (We've only heard Ep. 1 so far.)

For an audio show to boast the names of an Oscar winner, Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee, it should be expertly-produced right? Good thing Homecoming is. The series has a script from Eli Horowitz (The Silent HistoryThe Pickle Index) and Micah Bloomberg (Creative Control), and sound design by Mark Phillips (Serial), who makes atmospheric noises so textured and realistic that there's never a need to question whether someone's voice is coming from a tape recorder, outside a restaurant or inside a busy airport.

Memorable line

Colin (David Schwimmer) talks to Heidi (Catherine Keener) in a phone-call that's much funnier heard than read:

"I'm switching at the airport in Detroit. They did a nice job, actually... I just stepped on a little girl's backpack. It was in the middle of the walkway. This is a walkway! Yeah. Alright. Goodbye. Good talk."
