5 things to binge-watch this weekend: Natalie Portman edition
Get ready for Jackie Kennedy. We mean, Natalie Portman.
The Oscar-winning actress is chasing her second statuette this year with a critically-acclaimed performance in Jackie as the former first lady. With the film hitting theaters this weekend, we thought it was the right time to revisit Portman's long career. We picked five movies that you can binge this weekend to get ready for an Awards season full of adorable acceptance speeches from the actress.
If you forgot she was a child star: The Professional
When Portman was just 12 she starred in this Luc Besson film alongside Jean Reno and Gary Oldman. Suffice to say it wasn't exactly appropriate viewing for her age group at the time, but it's a fantastic action flick.
Rent The Professional on Amazon or Google Play.
If you want to be uplifted: Where the Heart Is
If you've never seen Where the Heart Is, you're missing out on an absolute gem of a 90s movie. Portman plays a pregnant woman who, abandoned at a Walmart by her boyfriend, starts a new life. In the process she lives in that Walmart, gives birth in that Walmart, moves in with Stockard Channing, befriends Ashley Judd, lives through a tornado, becomes a photographer and so much more. It's cheesy, it's heart-warming, and it might be just what you need.
Stream Where the Heart Is on Amazon with a Starz Subscription or rent it on Google Play.
If you're done with Gilmore Girls and need a mother-daughter story: Anywhere But Here
There is life after Gilmore Girls. We swear. If you still need something to scratch the itch of a dramedy about mothers and daughters, try Anywhere But Here, in which Portman plays Susan Sarandon's daughter.
Rent Anywhere But Here on Amazon or Google Play.
If you remember, remember the fifth of November: V for Vendetta
If you can handle the dystopian darkness, the 2005 film is a classic. It helped launch Portman into superstardom thanks to that haircut (and her performance) and may be more relevant to you this year.
Rent V for Vendetta on Amazon or Google Play.
If you can't wait for the Oscar tour for Jackie: Black Swan
Did we mention how great Portman was in Jackie? Because she's pretty stunning. But this isn't her first performance to blow us all away. Back in 2010 we could talk about nothing but Black Swan, where she plays a ballerina going through psychosis while performing in Swan Lake.
Rent Black Swan on Amazon, iTunes or Google Play.
