Robert de Niro on Meryl Streep's speech: It needed to be said
Robert de Niro is the latest celebrity to weigh in on Meryl Streep's much-discussed Golden Globes speech.
In a letter published by People, the fellow Cecil B. deMille Award recipient said he shares her "sentiments about punks and bullies. Enough is enough."

While accepting the Cecil B. deMille Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Globes on Sunday, Streep was critical of President-elect Donald Trump, referencing a time on the campaign trail that he appeared to mock a disabled reporter. Though Streep didn't mention the President-elect's name in her speech, Trump got the message and responded via Twitter calling her "overrated."
Cue heated debate about when to voice one's opinion.
George Clooney also spoke out in support of his friend, telling People that the right time for actors to get involved is when their platform can spotlight important issues that don't get enough attention.
De Niro agrees, noting in his letter that Streep inspires others to speak up.
"You, with your elegance and intelligence, have a powerful voice – one that inspires others to speak up as they should so their voices will be heard too," he wrote
