Shirley MacLaine recycled a Chico's top at the Oscars
Move aside, Emma Watson and Anne Hathaway: Shirley MacLaine is the reigning queen of the sustainable fashion bandwagon.
At this year's Oscars ceremony, The Last Word actress eschewed stylists and designer racks, and instead recycled "black sequined slacks from one of my Vegas shows, a top from some movie — I’ve forgotten which one — and a turtleneck from Chico’s," she told the New York Times recently.
After all, MacLaine said: "I’ve got enough clothes in my closet for 13 lifetimes."
And on her feet? "What do you call those summer shoes? Espadrilles," said MacLaine, 82, who presented the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film with Charlize Theron. "Thank goodness the slacks were long enough to cover them up."
Oscar night ended on an awkward note for her family, after MacLaine's brother Warren Beatty received the wrong envelope and co-presenter Faye Dunaway read the wrong winner for the best picture award. MacLaine was in the audience during the historically chaotic scene.
“I think we’re all processing the horror of it," MacLaine told Paste BN in the days following the flub. "I’m still dealing with it."
"I’m concerned with how (Beatty) must have felt being so close to him. I’m three years older, and I’m protective," MacLaine says. "We know how difficult it was for him, but it was also for me."
