Twitter casts Rihanna and Lupita Nyong'o in the hacker movie of our dreams
Did Twitter just dream-cast the best movie of 2017?
A new hacker drama starring Rihanna and Lupita Nyong'o, directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Issa Rae doesn't exist yet, but if this one viral thread comes to fruition, it may just make its way to theaters. The saga started last week when Twitter user @1800SADGAL captioned an already-perfect picture of Rihanna and Nyong'o sitting next to each other at a 2014 Miu Miu fashion show.
"Rihanna looks like she scams rich white men and Lupita is the computer smart best friend that helps plan the scams," the user wrote.
Soon, the tweet went viral and caught Nyong'o's eye, with the Black Panther actress unofficially expressing interest in the concept. “I'm down if you are," she tweeted, tagging Rihanna.
The singer responded, coining a nickname for Lupita in the process. “I’m in Pit’z," she tweeted back.
The internet quickly Twitter-recruited Insecure's Issa Rae to write the project and A Wrinkle In Time director Ava DuVernay to direct.
"Lights set. Camera's up. Ready to call action for these #queens," DuVernay tweeted, captioning her message with a crown emoji.
As Issa Rae joked in a statement to Vanity Fair, if any production company actually wants to make the Twitter-generated fake movie, she's on board to write it.
"Oh I’m definitely going to shoot my shot,” she said. “This is an amazing opportunity and all credit to Black Twitter."
And according to a tweet from Codeblack Films, a division of Lionsgate responsible for the new Tupac biopic All Eyez On Me, some studios may actually be interested in the project-that's-not-actually-a-project.
"Lionsgate is ready! Are you guys serious? If so a deal can be done this week!" the tweet read.
Even if the whole exchange was just for fun, fans can still dream.
