Watch the first trailer for Angelina Jolie's Netflix drama 'First They Killed My Father'

The first trailer for Angelina Jolie's long-awaited film First They Killed My Father is finally here.

Set in Cambodia, the story follows a young Loung Ung (Sareum Srey Moch), whose memoir inspired the film, as she escapes the Cambodian genocide under the Khmer Rouge regime.

In the trailer, released Wednesday, we see young Ung's normal life with her family go from bad to worse as Khmer Rouge soldiers attack her native city in 1975.

The trailer continues with powerful images, promising a compelling historical drama that follows Ung's training as a child solider and beyond.

The trailer comes less than a week after Jolie defended the film's controversial child-actor audition "game" depicted in Vanity Fair

First They Killed My Father is set to hit Netflix in Sept.
