John Oliver jokes about North Korea, everyone's 'excuse for putting off chores this week'
On Sunday night's episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver decided to take a hilarious look at "America's number one excuse for putting off chores this week," aka North Korea.
The late night host joked about President Trump's "fire and fury" warning to North Korea Tuesday in response to the country's latest nuclear tests.
"You know, I could do laundry, but if the world is about erupt into nuclear war, what really is the point?" Oliver joked.
He then began trying to better understand North Korea, including learning about the country's apparent (and random) love for accordions and watching a clip of "North Korea godzilla."
Towards the end of the show, Oliver said he would love the chance to speak directly to the North Korean people to try to set things straight.
"On the off chance that this show is smuggled over their border on a USB drive crammed with NCIS episodes, I would just like to say this," he began. "Hi, North Korea. You may be hearing some frightening rhetoric from our president, but if it helps at all, when our president says words, he doesn't necessarily mean what those words mean."
The clip ended on a rousing musical note, with "Weird Al" Yankovic performing some music-based diplomacy, through what Oliver called "the international language of the accordion."
"Please don't nuke us North Korea. Right now we're all a little tense," Yankovic sang. "Believe me, we don't hate you. Frankly, we don't even think that much about you, no offense!"
