The United Kingdom – and the world – is mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth II. She died Thursday at age 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

As crowds of reporters, tourists and royal watchers gathered outside Buckingham Palace on Thursday, a rainbow appeared. Some photos captured a double rainbow.
Charles, the queen’s eldest son and heir to the throne of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is now king.
Elizabeth ascended the throne in 1952, making her the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch. The queen’s husband, Prince Philip, died in 2021.

They had four children, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother,” King Charles said in his first statement as monarch. “During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”
