The tradition of kneeling to propose is shrouded in mystery. One theory is that it’s a throwback to the Middle Ages when noblemen knelt before their intended as a sign of devotion and servitude. Though because Western society was predominantly patriarchal during medieval times, that theory is a little questionable. What we do know is that the giving of an engagement ring does have a solid history, with records suggesting men gave rings to their betrothed at least as far back as Roman times.
Nowadays, of course, the advent of social media has meant that marriage proposals are less likely to be private romantic moments between partners and more likely to be made-for-viral video affairs to share with the world.
