This dad hasn't been home for 40 years. Watch his son gift him an unforgettable surprise.
Eli Fernandez's father hadn't been home to El Salvador since fleeing to Australia with his family more than 40 years ago.
“I don’t come from a rich family, but my parents gave us everything they never had," Fernandez said. "At points they struggled financially, getting eviction notices, lights being cut off, water being turned off."
Fernandez had been dreaming of the day he could finally repay some of that sacrifice and properly express his gratitude to his father.
“In my early teens, I saw these things, and I made a promise to myself, someway, somehow, I will do everything in my power to give back to my family.”

Fernandez is now in El Salvador with his father, working toward buying land and starting a business there.
“If my dad and mom can see their country in the last years of their lives better [than] when they left it, and seeing us all here thriving not surviving, in that moment I can rest easier at night,” he said. “Everything I am and everything I do is for my family.”
