Watch this nail-biting helicopter rescue of a man stuck on a cliff at the edge of the sea

An emergency phone call may have saved a man's life after a terrifying clifftop fall.

The man, who's been described as elderly, was on the Lands End hiking trail in San Francisco when he fell over the edge of a cliff at the water's edge. Despite falling some 30 yards, he was able to call for help via his cellphone.

First responders included members of the San Francisco Fire Department and a California Highway Patrol helicopter crew. They were initially unable to locate the injured man. But after a search lasting some 40 minutes, he was found in a grove of cliffside trees.

In a delicate operation, the man was winched to safety and flown to hospital where he's said to be in serious but stable condition.
