A grieving hurricane survivor whose home was devastated reclaimed some of her most treasured possessions thanks to the heroic efforts of a stranger.

When Hurricane Helene made landfall in September of 2024, it wreaked havoc across vast areas of the southeast.

63-year-old Mary Moss barely had time to pack some of her belongings before the storm barreled through Asheville, North Carolina, destroying her home of 40 years.

Mary's possessions were gone! Most painful of all was the loss of her family photos, including those of her late son, Tommy, who died at 12 years old. The precious photographs of him had been a cherished memory.

“The first thing I thought is, there goes everything I had of Tommy and all the stuff I have for my children,’ she said. “Those are irreplaceable memories - the photographs, their school projects. That’s everything.”

The situation seemed hopeless, just as it did to many who'd lost everything in the storm. But a miracle worker was at hand.

After finding a family photo in the wreckage of a friend's storm-ravaged house, Taylor Schenker had the idea of creating a site where photos lost in the hurricane could be posted in the hope that they could be reunited with their owners.

So, “Photos from Helene” was born, and that would result in a life-changing discovery for Mary and her family.
