A graduation ceremony is one of the proudest moments in a person’s life, and most students can’t wait to share it with their family members. If a special loved one isn’t there, it can take some of the shine off the day. However, when a parent is in the military, it’s not always a given that they can attend every big family event. So, when Pamela Hernandez prepared to accept her master’s degree from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, she was resigned to the idea that her dad, Navy Petty Officer Second Class Douglas Hernandez, would not be there due to his posting in Dubai.

But where there’s a will there’s a way. And unknown to Pamela, Petty Officer Hernandez made a 30-hour trip from the Middle East to surprise his daughter on her big day.
