'Frozen' ices 'Paranormal Activity' at the box office
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones tried to send a shiver through the box office this weekend, but it couldn't match the chill of Frozen.
The Disney animated film, which has become a commercial juggernaut, claimed the No. 1 spot on the first weekend of 2014, capturing $20.7 million, according to studio estimates from box-office trackers Rentrak.
Since being released Nov. 22, the film voiced by Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel has done $297.8 million and captured its second box-office crown.
Frozen also topped the box office the weekend of Dec. 6, making it the rare film to take the ticket-sales title on non-consecutive weekends.
The haul was enough to defeat the lone newcomer of the weekend, the spinoff of Paranormal Activity. Paranormal did $18.2 million, good for second place.
Analysts projected about $22 million for the "found-footage" horror film, though the series has been slowing of late. Paranormal Activity 4 opened to $29 million in 2012. That film would do $53.9 million, the lowest gross of any in the franchise.
Despite the revenue declines, the series remains a money-maker, as the latest film cost just $5 million. Paranormal Activity 5 opens Oct. 24.
The Peter Jackson adaptation The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug took third place with $16.3 million.
Martin Scorsese's drama The Wolf of Wall Street was fourth with $13.4 million, followed by American Hustle with $13.2 million.
Final figures are expected Monday.
