'Top Gun,' 'Ghostbusters' added to Film Registry

Nearly 30 years after its release, Top Gun is flying high into the Library of Congress.

Librarian of Congress David Mao announced that the 1986 action/romance starring Tom Cruise has been added to the National Film Registry, among 25 total films to make the cut for 2015. Other movies considered "cinematic treasures" and inducted this year include 1997 crime noir L.A. Confidential, 1994 prison drama The Shawshank Redemption and 1984 horror comedy Ghostbusters, with Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd.

The 2015 crop includes films spanning from 1894-1997, with Hollywood blockbusters, silent movies, shorts, and documentaries, among them. This year's selections bring the total number of movies in the registry to 675, with other new additions including The Mark of Zorro, Sink or Swim and The Story of Menstruation.

To be added to the registry, films must be at least 10 years old and deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant.  The Librarian selects 25 titles annually with input from members of the National Film Preservation Board and Library film staff, as well as thousands of nominations made by the public. Nominations for next year's registry can be made on the NFPB's website at www.loc.gov/film.

"Selecting a film for the National Film Registry recognizes its importance to cinema and America’s cultural and artistic history,” Mao says. “The registry is an invaluable way to advance public awareness of the richness, creativity and variety of our nation’s film heritage.”
