10 must-know moments from the Golden Globes

The Golden Globe Awards were chock-full of big-name winners and surprises Sunday night. The most cringe-worthy, heartwarming and viral moments of the show:

1. Ricky Gervais takes shots at Caitlyn Jenner, Sean Penn and Mel Gibson

The Globes host earned some uncomfortable laughs as he took digs at stars in attendance and not. "I've changed. Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously," Gervais said, referencing Jenner's transition. Although he applauded Caitlyn's bravery, "she didn't do a lot for women drivers." He also called Penn "a snitch" in regard to his "El Chapo" interview and prodded Gibson for his anti-Semitic comments, adding, "I'd rather have a drink with him in his hotel room tonight than Bill Cosby."

2. The Internet's new crush Oscar Isaac won (just not for playing Poe Dameron)

Oscar Isaac had a breakout year in 2015, thanks to starring turns in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Ex Machina, and in HBO miniseries Show Me A Hero, for which he won a Golden Globe for best actor. Backstage, the hotshot X-Wing pilot expressed gratitude for his recent success. "It’s incredible," Isaac said. "Very blessed and humbled by everything that’s happened."

3. Sylvester Stallone forgets to thank Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan

Stallone earned a standing ovation as he walked to the podium to accept the best supporting actor for Creed, delivering a tearful speech thanking his "imaginary friend Rocky Balboa for being the best friend I ever had." Although the Twitterverse was annoyed that he didn't thank Creed director Coogler or co-star Jordan on the air, Stallone returned to the stage at the commercial break to include them, adding, "Did I say Ryan Coogler? You are a brilliant filmmaker."

4. Lady Gaga gives heartfelt best actress speech

"I feel like Cher in John Patrick Shanley's Moonstruck," the pop star said after her win for best actress in a miniseries/TV movie for her work in American Horror Story: Hotel. "This is one of the greatest moments of my life." But it couldn't top Leonardo DiCaprio's startled reaction to Gaga brushing by him on her way to the stage just moments earlier, which exploded on Twitter.

5. Aziz Ansari goes viral with throwaway gag

Also popular online: Master of None nominee Ansari had many Twitter users in stitches when the camera panned to his table, showing him reading a book called Losing to Jeffrey Tambor With Dignity. Although both men lost to Mozart in the Jungle's Gael Garcia Bernal for best actor in a comedy series, the well-executed cutaway was a Globe-worthy feat.

6. Eva Longoria, America Ferrera shut down Latina stereotypes

The Golden Globes' Twitter account confused Ferrera with Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez during the nominations announcement last month, so the actress had some fun with it while presenting with Longoria. "Hi, I'm Eva Longoria, not Eva Mendes," Longoria said. "And neither one of us are Rosario Dawson."

"Well said, Salma (Hayek)," Ferrera quipped, to which Longoria added, "Thank you, Charo."

7. Jennifer Lawrence thanks David O. Russell

Beating out her BFF, Trainwreck star Amy Schumer, Lawrence won her third Golden Globe for her performance in Joy. Along with honoring real-life counterpart Joy Mangano (the Miracle Mop mogul who inspired the film), she spent most of her speech thanking her director. "You make movies like you don't even care if anyone's going to see them" Lawrence said. "I mean that as a compliment! ... I want us to be buried next to each other, I really do."

8. Taraji P. Henson refuses to be cut off

The Empire star strutted to the stage to claim best actress in a TV drama, for embodying the quotable Cookie Lyon on the hip-hop soap. She earned huge cheers when she paused mid-speech. " 'Please wrap?' " Henson said in disbelief. "I waited 20 years for this. You gon’ wait. Yeah, you gon' give me a little more time."

9. Jennifer Lopez stuns in a mustard-colored cape

The hottest fashion accessory of this year's Golden Globes? Capes. Regina King, Laverne Cox, Taraji P. Henson and Emilia Clarke were among the stars sporting free-flowing fabrics, but none made a bolder statement than J.Lo.

10. Amy Schumer, Jennifer Lawrence make convincing bid for 2017 hosts

Gervais' profane hosting stint earned mixed reactions on Twitter, with some people suggesting that Emmy host Andy Samberg take the reins next year, while others supporting Schumer and Lawrence. The actresses (and future co-stars) presented clips from their movies with winning banter. "Hello, I'm J.Law," Lawrence said. "And I am A.Schu," Schumer added, before Lawrence reminded her that "you can't just give yourself a celebrity nickname, it has to come naturally." The BFFs lamented the preconceived notions people have about women in Hollywood. "Yeah, they're just like, 'Oh, Jen and Amy, they're so pretty,' " Schumer joked. " 'Everyone likes them and wants to hang out with them and they seem so fun to be around and, ugh, they should be models.' "
