Helen Mirren: Diversity problem is more than just the Oscars

Helen Mirren is the latest star to weigh in on the diversity issue surrounding this year's Academy Awards nominations.

The British actress, who was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award for her performance in Trumbo but not an Oscar, spoke about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy in an interview with the U.K.'s Channel 4 news. Mirren said that it was "unfair" to the Academy to place the blame for the lack of representation in film squarely on their shoulders, saying that the problem is with Hollywood at large

“I think it’s unfair to attack the Academy. It just so happened this year, it went that way," she said. “Idris Elba absolutely would have been nominated for an Oscar. He wasn’t because not enough people saw, or wanted to see a film about child soldiers.”

She continued, “I’m saying that the issue we need to be looking at is what happens before the film gets to the Oscars, what kinds of films are made and the way in which they’re cast, and the scripts."
