Warren Beatty's 'Rules Don't Apply' to open AFI Fest

Warren Beatty is getting a lavish return to Hollywood, thanks to the American Film Institute.
The movie legend's new film Rules Don't Apply — Beatty's first directorial effort in 18 years and first acting role since 2001 — is getting its world premiere at the opening night gala at AFI Fest 2016. Now in its 30th year, the event takes place in Hollywood Nov. 10 to 17.
"Warren Beatty has charmed and challenged moviegoers from his first moment on screen, and his talents as an actor, director, writer and producer have always transcended trends," said AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale in a statement.
Beatty, who was awarded the AFI's life achievement award in 2008, wrote, directed and produced Rules, set in 1950s Hollywood. The romantic comedy/drama follows young acting ingenue Marla (Lily Collins), her driver Frank (Alden Ehrenreich) and their eccentric boss Howard Hughes (Beatty), who doesn't approve of workplace romances.
The supporting cast includes Alec Baldwin, Annette Bening, Candice Bergen, Steve Coogan, Ed Harris, Haley Bennett, Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, Taissa Farmiga, Megan Hilty, Oliver Platt and Martin Sheen.
The complete AFI Fest 2016 lineup and schedule will be unveiled in October. Ticket packages are on sale now at AFI.com, and individual tickets will be available Nov. 1.
