SAG Awards snubs: Tom Hanks in 'Sully,' 'Silence,' 'Loving'

The Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations announced Wednesday morning featured a few whopping surprises. The union representing movie and TV actors nominated Emily Blunt for the critically toasted The Girl on a Train and the cast of the arthouse drama Captain Fantastic for acting awards. But in each category, there was at least one shocking oversight.

Here are the biggest snubs in the SAG Awards, which will be given out Jan. 29 (TNT and TBS, 8 p.m. ET/5 PT):

Tom Hanks, Sully: Yes, Tom Hanks' best actor oversight for Sully was the story of Monday's Golden Globe nominations. But the beloved actor, who proudly showed his SAG card when he won for Forrest Gump at the first-ever SAG Awards in 1995, suffered a second big blow at the hands of his fellow actors.

"Being shut out here does not bode well for his Oscar chances," says Erik Davis, managing editor of the movie site Fandango.com.

LovingRuth Negga and Joel  Edgerton have received raves and Oscar contender status for their roles as an interracial couple in Jeff Nichols' civil rights romance Loving. However, both actors and the cast were shut out of the SAG nominations.

Cast of La La Land: Both Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling received SAG acting nominations for director Damien Chazelle's musical comedy La La Land. However, the Oscar front-runner lost out in the best-cast category, the SAG equivalent of best picture. Meanwhile, fellow Oscar contenders Moonlight and Manchester By the Sea made the cut, along with Hidden Figures, Captain Fantastic and Fences.

Silence: Martin Scorsese's recently completed passion project Silence, starring Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver and Liam Neeson as priests in 17th-century Japan, suffered from a lack of screening opportunities. With few voters for early awards shows able to see the film, it missed out on Golden Globe nominations Monday, followed by a complete shutout for SAG Awards.

"It's not that the film doesn't deserve nominations — it does," Davis says. "The problem is it debuted so late."

Annette Bening, 20th Century Women: Bening has been an awards front-runner for her emotional performance as a strong single mother in writer/director Mike Mills' coming-of-age drama, receiving Critics' Choice and Golden Globe nominations. But the actress and film struck out in the SAGs.

Evan Rachel Wood, Westworld: Thandie Newton received a best actress nomination for her android brothel worker role in HBO's critically acclaimed series Westworld, but droid centerpiece Wood was overlooked in the same category. Likewise, Anthony Hopkins missed out for his role as the enigmatic founder of the theme park.

Michael Shannon, Nocturnal Animals:  Aaron Taylor-Johnson took a surprise Golden Globe acting nomination for his role in Tom Ford's second feature film. But Nocturnal Animals was denied at the SAGs, including Michael Shannon, an awards favorite for his role as detective Bobby Andes.

The Americans: The FX series broke through its Emmy nomination curse this fall and earned Golden Globe acting nominations for stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. But the Russian spies living in America received nothing at the SAG Awards, as the drama was shut out.

Jessica Chastain, Miss Sloane:  As a sought-after Washington lobbyist seeking gun control legislation, Chastain has earned rave reviews, awards front-runner status and a Golden Globe nomination. But director John Madden's Miss Sloane and Chastain were voted down by SAG.
