'Vigilant' security at Cannes Film Festival after the Paris knife attack

CANNES, France – Festival-goers at Cannes Film Festival are experiencing increased security measures after Saturday's knife attack in Paris.

A Chechen man stabbed five people in a busy neighborhood in the heart of the French capital Saturday night. The attacker killed a 29-year-old man and wounded four others before being shot by police.

Witnesses in Paris reported hearing the man shouting "Allahu akbar," the Arabic phrase for "God is great," during the attack. The Islamic State group claimed the attacker was one of its fighters, but provided no evidence or details about his identity.

A downpour hit Cannes on Sunday, increasing umbrella-filled lines around the festival. One entrance to the Palais des Festivals was closed because of increased security.

On Saturday night, 82 female filmmakers, directors and actresses held a march at the premiere of Eva Husson's Girls of the Sun in a demand for parity in the competition.

The festival referred Paste BN to comments made by local authorities Sunday morning that security measures would remain strong. The local préfet has encouraged police to be more vigilant and on the move, festival representatives told Paste BN.
