Zombies! John Butler Trio's 'Only One' video premieres
With The Walking Dead on hiatus until February, zombie fans may need an extra dose of the flesh-eating creatures. That's where the John Butler Trio's video for Only Onecomes in.
Butler felt the video, which premieres at Paste BN, required a different approach from the song, the first single from the forthcoming Flesh & Blood, the group's first studio album in four years. Flesh & Blood will come out Feb. 4, on Vanguard Records.
"Only One is one of those 'turn around' songs," he says. "You know, essentially a 'down'/sad verse, a bridge that slowly lifts its head and a chorus that turns around, flips it and makes you feel good. I love how you can do that within a small amount of time in a song. But if this song was accompanied by the same kind of video, I might want to vomit! I've seen way too many cheesy videos to traverse that trite literal ground. I wanted the song and video almost to be juxtaposed but still somehow have an element of love and humor."
Butler says he had the idea of using Only One to tell a zombie love story for a while. "I thought it could be cool if executed well," he says. "Somebody told me of the movie Warm Bodies shortly after that, and I decided just to act like i didn't know it existed, not watch it, and keep moving forward with the idea."
The group shot the video last month in Victoria Park in Western Australia with director Ben Young. "The moment he heard the idea he was champing at the bit to do it," Butler says. "Ben fleshed out the story, script and got busy casting and putting together an amazing group of extras to flesh out the video." No pun intended.
"We were all concerned how to walk the fine line of being realistic and not cheap-looking, not talking ourselves too seriously and still having humor amongst it all," Butler says. "Ben and the whole team totally out did themselves and, in my opinion, made a seriously cool and funny video. I love it. Even if I do look dead."
