Michael Jackson joins elite club of celebrity holograms

Although Michael Jackson's been dead for nearly five years, the King of Pop ruled Sunday's Billboard Music Awards show. An eerie, powerful hologram of a performance brought Jackson back to life. A troupe of real-live dancers kept up with Jackson, as he performed Slave to the Rhythm. It was an emotional experience for the audience, who applauded and cried. Jackson joins a small, but elite club of performers who have also appeared by hologram.

A hologram of late rapper Tupac Shakur took its place alongside Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre at Coachella in 2012.

Rapper M.I.A. and singer Janelle Monae combined their solo performances in different cities to show life-sized 3D projections as the grand finales of their shows.

Last year, hip-hop collective Wu-Tang Clan resurrected late member ODB as a hologram.

In 2007, American Idol brought Elvis Presley back from the dead, or wherever he's been hiding out all these years, to do shake his hips with Celine Dion. They used a method called rotoscoping, the same technology used in Forrest Gump.
