Rocker Hagar cancels concert in pummeled Cabo

Rocker Sammy Hagar is urging his legion of Redhead fans not to venture down to Cabo San Lucas in the hopes that his annual Birthday Bash concert will go on.

"If it's not safe enough for me and my family, it's not safe enough for my extended family of fans," says Hagar, whose home and Cabo Wabo Cantina both sustained significant damage when Hurricane Odile slammed into the Mexican resort town early this week. "Unfortunately, there will be no concert."

Mexican military flights have transported some 18,000 people from the devastated area, many of them tourists. The damage from the storm includes the loss of electrical power, a compromised water system and the destruction of property.

Hagar's bar was "in OK shape, but my home was right in the path of the storm," he said, adding that his swimming pool is filled with sand. Hagar says some fans posted "comments saying they were going to go anyway, but that's very dangerous given the situation there." Ticket refund information could be found at redrocker.com.

The concert had been scheduled for the week of Oct. 7, and has been a draw for Hagar fans for decades. The musician bought the cantina during his Van Halen days, and his annual concert on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula would have turned 24 with next month's performance.

"We will be back up and running, eventually," says Hagar. "But things look tough right now."
