Double Grammy nominee Trainor's having a 'Ball' tonight
You know those celebrities who say they weren't aware award nominations were being announced, only to find out when their phone starts buzzing?
Yeah, Meghan Trainor's not one of those.
The 20-year-old singer, whose All About That Bass received Grammy nominations for song and record of the year Friday, says she had a hard time falling asleep the night before after getting in from the recording studio around midnight.
"I thought, 'How am I supposed to fall asleep when we'll know if I got it or not at, like, 5 a.m.?'" says Trainor, who's in Los Angeles to play KIIS-FM's Jingle Ball tonight. "I said out loud, 'It'll be OK if I don't get nominated; I'll still be so grateful for the amazing year I've had.'"
A few hours later, her producer, Kevin Kadish, called with news of her record-of-the-year nomination. He called again a little later to tell her she'd gotten a nomination for song, as well.
"I was out to breakfast with my brother," Trainor says. "I ended up screaming in this little restaurant."
In both categories, Trainor's up against Taylor Swift's Shake It Off, Sam Smith's Stay With Me and Sia's Chandelier. Iggy Azalea's Fancy received a nomination in the record category, while Hozier's Take Me to Church is up for song.
"It's incredible, because those are some of my favorite songs," Trainor says. "I'm like, 'How am I up here with these incredible people?'
"Like, Sam is a friend of mine. I just texted him immediately, like, 'Congrats! I'm rooting for you! I love you so much!' He's like, 'You, too!' I'm so honored to be in the list, I can't even believe it."
A year ago at this time, Trainor had already written All About That Bass, but her record deal was still two months away and she was headed home to Nantucket, Mass., for the holidays.
"By New Year's my dad said, 'I don't know why, but I think this is going to be your year,'" she says. "And he was right."
