Toto bassist Mike Porcaro dies at 59

Mike Porcaro, the bass player for Toto, died Sunday following a battle with ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 59.

Steve Porcaro, Mike's brother and keyboardist for the band, posted the news on Facebook.

And fellow bandmate Steve Lukather paid tribute to Porcaro in a Tweet:

Porcaro became an official member of Toto following the departure of the band's original bass player David Hungate around the time of Toto's big 1982 album Toto IV, according to Rolling Stone.

Porcaro appeared on albums including Isolation (1984), Fahrenheit (1986), Mindfields (1998) and Through the Looking Glass (2002).

About 10 years ago, he started noticing weakness in his fingers and hands. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2006.

In January, Toto announced it would be releasing its first studio album in a decade, Toto XIV, followed by a world tour, kicking off in May. Hungate is returning as bassist.
