Watch: Earl Sweatshirt punches stage crasher
Oh, you crazy concertgoers. Will you ever learn?
At least once in their careers, most major artists have to deal with an overly excited fan rushing the stage during a show. Maroon 5's Adam Levine handled the situation remarkably well at an Anaheim, Calif., concert in April, giving a young woman a hug before she was promptly escorted offstage by security.
Earl Sweatshirt, on the other hand, was a very different story when a fan ran up behind him during a Sydney show on Friday. After the stage crasher grabbed him, Earl punched the guy square in the face before other men threw him to the ground.
A representative for the rising hip-hop star told Pitchfork: "That fan is not hugging him. He approached from behind and his arms are around Earl's face and neck." Another rep added, "Earl was attacked as far as any artist performing onstage would be concerned that is ambushed from behind, not hugged."
Earl tweeted about the incident afterward, writing, "Keep your hands to yourself and don't sneak up on (guys) in the middle of soul bearing. I'm not a tough guy!! I don't like my personal space breached just like you. Just respect (people) out here man not just me everybody."
After playing Australia's Splendour in the Grass festival Sunday, Earl will start another leg of his North American tour in Joliet, Ill., on Aug. 11.
